Posted In: News by admin
  • Each Kindle will have its own Email address - can you say targeted  marketing.
  • Looks like the  news about a proboscis type reading light is correct.
  • Download contents via EVDO or WiFi
  • Typical download will be 2 minutes - never judge a book by its cover though.
  • No new design in hte works. What were they thinking?
  • Around 100 news sources at launch plus books - those things Amazon used to be famous for
  • Audiobook support - Go Audible?
  • Headphone jack - USB?
  • Unveiled in NYC at the W Hotel on Monday

I have it on good authority that the Kindle will indeed launch on Monday at the swanky W Hotel in New York. Evidently, there won’t be features like a calendar or address book or even a backlight! There will however be a reading light attached to an adjustable arm which sounds really awful.  You’ll be able to download digital editions of popular newspapers such as The Wall Street Journal and New York Times as well as e-books via its EVDO connection. The final price hasn’t changed from the original figure of $399 - hopefully there will be deals available - perhaps along the lines of the Audible.com monthly subscription and free player deals.  More details as they emerge.

We’ve received a number of tips and whispers indicating that November 19th is the new launch day for Kindle. We’ll take that with an enormous pinch of NaCl for now - more details as we get them…

Kindle specs document from FCC

Posted In: News by admin

Someone sent me a supposedly leaked document from the FCC that contains many pictures of the Kindle. I suspect it was available on the FCC site at one point but Google or archive.org wouldn’t tell me. You can download it here.

I assumed the terrible pictures we’ve all seen were a dummy device at best and most likely a crude rendering but that doesn’t appear to be the case. The device in these pictures looks like it’s the real thing. Note the processor - an Intel PXA255 - the same one used in the iLiad.

The reliable (normally!) folk over at Engadget posted a story that implies the Kindle will be delayed until the end of the year, which likely means missing out on the lucrative Christmas market. Probably worth another quick look at the “pictures” taken from the FCC site - is it really going to look like that? I do hope not. Also, noteworthy is the 800×600 screen - that really isn’t going to cut it these days, unless of course that means it runs for 6 months on a single charge.

Reports are appearing which imply that Amazon will use Sprint’s EVDO network to transmit data to it’s Kindle e-book reader. Given the comparative low cost of an all-you-can-eat Sprint data plan, this may not be a bad option. Of course, this depends on how much the device is and how much the media costs. Fingers crossed for an easy way to publish your own material in a non-DRM fashion.

Good times ahead for Amazon who just announced: “a third-quarter profit of $80 million, a threefold increase from the $19 million earned in the third quarter of 2006. It reported sales of 3.26 billion, up 41 percent from $2.31 billion in the same quarter last year” - evidently this was in (in part at least) fuel by speculation over the Kindle: “This fall, Amazon is also expected to introduce an electronic book device, called the Amazon Kindle, and an online store where users can download e-books.”.

Everyone’s favorite tech site Engadget noted that a search on Amazon for “kindle edition” leads to over 600 books, some of which can be “auto-delivered wirelessly to Kindle.” - exciting stuff.
